Read on to learn more about this eye health condition and how our eye doctors can help.
The technical term for pink eye is conjunctivitis, and refers to an acute inflammation of the outer membrane of the eyes and inner layer of the eyelids. The condition is typically caused by either a viral or bacterial infection. Anyone can get pink eye, however it most common affects children.
This eye condition is highly contagious, but fortunately the spread of it can be well controlled with proper hand hygiene and other behavioral modifications (such as avoiding touching your eyes, washing your hands frequently and especially before/after touching your face or eyes, throwing away any contact lenses worn while infected with pink eye, and changing your pillowcase every night while still affected).
As the name implies, one of the key symptoms includes pink or reddish eyes, which occurs as a result of the inflammation and underlying infection. Additional symptoms--which can range in severity and duration--include itchiness and general eye discomfort, watery discharge, blurry vision, and swollen or puffy eyelids.
Your eye doctor can diagnose pink eye by evaluating your eyes on an comprehensive exam and reviewing your history and symptoms. The sooner a correct diagnosis is provided, the sooner appropiate treatment can begin which can help reduce your uncomfortable symptoms and prevent the disease from spreading to other people around you.
At Eyes First, our eye doctor team takes the time necessary to develop a customized treatment plan that will best fit your needs. Typical pink eye treatment may include antibiotics (if caused by bacteria), antihistamine eye drops, and lifestyle guidance. We also may recommend that you refrain from using contact lenses (and use eyeglasses instead) until your infection clears.
