Corneal Refractive Therapy

Improve Your Vision with Corneal Refractive Therapy in Sandy Springs

At Eye 1st Vision Center, our optometrist in Sandy Springs offers corneal refractive therapy also known as Orthokeratology or Ortho-K. This type of therapy involves wearing gas permeable contact lenses for temporarily reshaping your cornea to decrease the severity of refractive errors, specifically nearsightedness and farsightedness.  In addition to shielding your eyes from microbes and particulates, the cornea is also in control of focusing nearly 75 percent of light entering the eye.  For vision to be 20/20, your cornea must be able to focus incoming light so that it falls precisely on your retina. By converting light rays into electrical impulses, your brain is then able to interpret images correctly.

Our Sandy Springs Optometrist Explains What Gas Permeable Contact Lenses for CRT

Made of silicone, fluorine and other materials contributing to their comfort and flexibility, gas (oxygen) permeable contact lenses for corneal refractive therapy are designed by our Sandy Springs optometrist to gently reshape your cornea while you wear them at night.  How often you need to wear your CRT contacts depends on whether you have mild or moderate refractive errors. To enjoy the best results, you need to adhere to the lens-wearing schedule provided by our optometrist.

What to Expect from CRT

Corneal refractive therapy allows you to see during the day without wearing glasses. The temporary effect of reshaping the cornea to improve vision usually lasts between 24 to 48 hours. When you first start wearing your CRT lenses, you will notice some improvement in daytime vision. For most patients, the full benefit of corneal refractive therapy is not apparent until they have worn their nighttime lenses for 10 to 14 days.

FDA trials investigating the effectiveness of corneal refractive therapy found that 70 percent of those wearing gas permeable contact lenses at night achieved 20/20 vision. Nearly 95 percent achieved 20/40 vision or better, a vision rate that allows people in most states to drive without wearing glasses.

Is CRT Suitable for Children?

No age restrictions exist for CRT. In fact, corneal refractive therapy may help delay or inhibit the progression of certain refractive errors in children. In addition, CRT is a good option for kids and teenagers who actively pursue sports and find it difficult to wear glasses while participating in vigorous physical activities.
