Causes and Symptoms of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a serious eye disease that will almost always worsen if left untreated. Specifically, glaucoma occurs when pressure levels increase to dangerous levels in one or both eyes. As the pressure increases, the eye's optic nerve becomes compressed, which can result in vision loss. Unfortunately, this vision loss can be permanent if not treated right away. Ultimately, glaucoma can even lead to blindness. For this reason, regular glaucoma screenings are highly recommended, especially for patients who are at a higher risk due to age, health, or family history of the disease.

Glaucoma doesn't always have obvious symptoms until vision loss begins to occur. However, in patients who do experience early symptoms, some of these may include:

  • sharp, sudden eye pain
  • distorted or blurry vision
  • unexplained nausea

If you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to schedule an appointment with our eye doctor as soon as possible for evaluation.

Glaucoma Treatment From Our Marietta Eye Doctor

Our Marietta eye doctor has a great deal of experience when it comes to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of both angle-closure and open-angle glaucoma. We'll begin with a screening that uses a special tool known as a tonometer to measure pressure in each eye. If high pressure is detected, there are treatment options we can explore based on the severity of your diagnosis and your lifestyle. For those with moderate glaucoma, we will generally recommend initial treatment with beta blocker medication, which can help to reduce pressure and keep it down without the need for invasive procedures. This method is often effective in preventing vision loss from glaucoma or, at the very least, keeping it from getting any worse. Medicated eye drops may also be used for this purpose.

For more advanced or severe cases of glaucoma, surgery may be required to reduce pressure in the eyes. This can be done either in the form of trabeculoplasty (which improved fluid drainage in the eye) or laser surgery (which removes tissue from the eye). Our optometrist will make a customized treatment recommendation based on your specific case.
