Even if you don't wear glasses or contacts, it's likely that you've noticed eye fatigue after you spend a long period of time staring at a screen. This eye fatigue is typically caused by blue light emitted by electronic screens. At Eye 1st Vision Center in Sandy Springs, our optometry professionals make a point to educate our patients about the dangers of blue light.
Most of the light that our eyes see throughout the day contains blue light, including light from the sun. Even though the amount of blue light that comes from electronic screens is small compared to the blue light the comes from the sun, the amount of time we spend staring at these screens is still a cause for concern. It's hard to say exactly what the long term effects of blue light may be, since there haven't been many long term studies yet on the effects of blue light on the eyes. In the short term, we know that prolonged exposure to blue light can cause insomnia, digital eyestrain, and retinal damage.
The good news: there are things that we can do to fight blue light. Blue light blocking glasses are useful, even if you don't typically use glasses to correct nearsightedness or farsightedness. Taking breaks from the computer to rest your eyes can be helpful. It's always a good idea to set a certain "no more electronics" time each night to help your eyes and brain prepare for sleep.
Whether you're in need of glasses, contacts/ contact lens exam, treatment for farsightedness/ nearsightedness, or simply need a vision health checkup, our optometrist is here to help.
