Flex Spending Accounts: Use It or Lose It

Flex Spending Accounts (FSA) are special savings accounts that allow employees to set aside funds to pay for medical expenses. Administrated by your employer, pre-tax funds are withdrawn from your paycheck and deposited into the savings account. Reimbursement is obtained upon presenting receipts for qualifying expenses. Funds that remain in your FSA account at the end of the year are lost, so be sure you use these funds before New Year's Day arrives.

What Qualifies as an Expense for Reimbursement with Flex Spending Accounts?

A wide range of medical and eye care expenses are allowable for reimbursement with flex spending accounts. If you have funds remaining for 2016, consider the following possibilities to put your funds to excellent use:

• Eye exams. If you or any of your family members is due for a yearly eye exam, call today for an appointment. All of the costs of this exam and associated vision services are reimbursable.
• Prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses. Even if you already have a pair and just need a backup, prescription lenses and frames are reimbursable expenses.
• Contact lenses and supplies. With your remaining FSA funds, you can pick up a few extra pairs of disposable contact lenses or cleaning supplies to carry you into 2017.
• Reading glasses.  If the fine print on your health insurance is getting tough to read, a pair of reading glasses may help. These glasses, whether purchased from your optometrist or over the counter, are reimbursable through your FSA.
