Orthokeratology FAQ

At Eye 1st Vision Center, we offer our patients throughout Sandy Springs GA orthokeratology contacts that help them see clearly during the day. These specialty contact lenses are worn at night and safely and temporarily reshape the surface of the eye. After a comprehensive eye exam with our optometrist, we can determine whether or not you will benefit from wearing orthokeratology lenses.

What are Orthokeratology Lenses?

Orthokeratology lenses, or ortho-k lenses, are gas-permeable contact lenses that you wear overnight. Corneal refractive therapy safely reshapes the surface of your eye so you can see clearly during the day.

Who Is the Best Candidate for Ortho-K Lenses?

Our eye doctor believes that the best candidate is someone with a prescription of +2.00 to -6.00. However, those with astigmatism should have a prescription that is no higher than -1.75. Those with dry eyes can wear these contact lenses to avoid eye irritation during the day.

How Do Ortho-K Contracts Work?

For vision to be 20/20, your cornea must be able to focus on incoming light so that it falls correctly on your retina. This allows you to see clearly. The temporary effect of reshaping your cornea with ortho-k contacts lasts between 24 and 48 hours. It can take up to two weeks of nightly wear for orthokeratology lenses to correct your vision depending on your prescription. Our eye doctor will give you more information on what to expect based on the condition of your eyes.

Can Children Wear These Contacts?

There are no age restrictions for corneal refractive therapy. Children have had success wearing these lenses. Orthokeratology is a great option for both kids and teenagers who want to pursue sports and find it difficult to wear glasses while participating.
