Pink Eye FAQs

Our Sandy Springs Optometrist Answers Your Pink Eye FAQs

Pink eye, also called conjunctivitis, occurs when something irritates and inflames the thin transparent membrane covering the outer eye and inner eyelid (called the conjunctiva). Our Sandy Spring optometrist team answers your questions about this disruptive condition!

What Causes Pink Eye?

Common causes of pink eye include bacterial infections, viral infections, allergies to triggers like pollen, dust, pet dander, mold, smoke, chemicals, medications, or cosmetics, and other underlying diseases. Pink eye can be extremely contagious if caused by a bacterial or viral infection. It's also possible to spread pink eye symptoms from one eye to the other by itching or touching your affected eye and then touching the other eye.

What Are the Symptoms of Pink Eye?

Pink eye symptoms can range from mildly annoying to severely disruptive. They include:

  • A pinkish or reddish discoloration to the whites of the eyes (this happens when blood vessels dilate to bring immune molecules into the area to help reduce inflammation and initiate the healing process)
  • Watery discharge that might look clear, greenish, or yellowish
  • Itching or burning in the eyes (a person might also notice a gritty sensation in the eye, as if something is stuck)
  • Increased sensitivity to bright light
  • Blurry vision

If pink eye is caused by an allergic reaction, a person might also experience other symptoms like a runny or stuffy nose, a sore throat, or a cough.
