Dangers of Improper Use of Contact Lenses

Dangers of Improper Use of Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are a boon to those people who need corrective action in order to have crystal-clear vision, but do not want to wear glasses. Like glasses, though, wearing contact lenses comes with certain responsibilities if you want to enjoy great vision as well as healthy eyes.

Advice From Your Sandy Springs Optometrist

As your Sandy Springs Optometrist, Dr. Shida wants our patients to know the importance of cleaning your contacts. In order to do so properly, and avoid eye irritation or even infection, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Preparing to Clean Your Contact Lenses

Always wash your hands with soap and water before handling your contact lenses. Rinse them thoroughly, and then dry them with a lint-free towel. Remove your contacts before swimming or before using the hot tub. Neither rewetting drops nor saline solution are designed to disinfect your contact lenses and should not be used to do so.

  • Cleaning Your Contact Lenses

Holding your contact lens in your hand, apply cleaning solution and rub with your fingers. Rinse each lens thoroughly with solution. Even if your cleaning solution states that it is "no rinse," this method results in the best results. Store each lens in its respective well of your contact case after you have filled with fresh soaking solution.

  • Cleaning Your Contact Case

After inserting your contact lenses, rinse the case with solution. Turn the case upside down and allow it to dry. Even with diligent cleaning, plan to replace your case at least every three months as it can be a source of contamination.

  • Replace Contacts as Recommended

Each contact manufacturer has a recommended replacement deadline for their contacts. Wearing your contact lenses beyond that date can deprive your eyes of needed oxygen and provide the perfect environment for ulcers, corneal infections, conjunctivitis and more.
