Here at Eye 1st Vision Center in Sandy Springs, GA our eye doctor can diagnose and treat your Age-Related Macular Degeneration ("AMD"). This condition causes the deterioration of your macula which is responsible for the central region of your eyesight.
AMD affects the macula, which is located in the center of the retina and controls your center vision. This condition is most common in individuals over the age of 60 but the disease may start at any age. The most common symptom is slow loss of your center sight. AMD does not cause pain in the eyes or any other symptoms. Because of these reasons, if you notice any change in your ability to see objects up close or far away you need to schedule an immediate appointment for a comprehensive eye health examination.
Our optometrist serving Sandy Springs, Brookhaven, Marietta, Roswell and Atlanta is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of AMD. AMD is caused by abnormal blood vessel growth in the back of the eye, and if you develop AMD in one eye, there is a good chance you will eventually experience AMD in both eyes. Diagnosing AMD involves taking pictures of your retina and macula during your eye care appointment.
Early detection is the best way to diagnose, treat and monitor the disease. The goal of treatment is to halt abnormal blood vessel proliferation and any leaking that may be occurring in order to preserve your vision. If you have already lost some vision due to AMD, it may not return. However, further loss of visual acuity can be slowed with treatment from one of our optometrist.
