Importance to visit your optometrist and get regular eye exams

Why is it important to visit your optometrist and get regular eye exams?

Not everyone realizes how important regular eye exams are. Comprehensive eye exams allow your eye doctor to check for common eye diseases, evaluate how well your eyes are working together, and assess your overall health. Our optometrist may even be able to detect diabetes or high blood pressure and refer you to a physician.

Who Should Get Regular Eye Exams?

The short answer is, everyone. Adults need to have regular eye exams to ensure they are using the right prescription glasses and to check for any signs of developing eye disease. Children need regular eye exams to ensure their vision health while they are growing and developing.

Children sometimes have difficulty with their school work and homework because they are having vision problems. If this goes undetected the child’s education will suffer. Children don’t know what “regular” vision is supposed to look like so when they are seeing blurry they may not realize there’s a problem.

Why Vision Screening Is No Substitute for a Complete Eye Exam by an Optometrist

Vision screenings are eye tests that are performed by health professionals other than the optometrist. It may also be performed at the DMV. These type of screenings normally include tests for blurry vision, checking for common eye diseases and muscle coordination.

Comprehensive eye exams, on the other hand, are performed by optometrists who test every aspect of your vision and eyesight. Depending on the results of the exam the eye doctor may recommend treatment plans, if necessary.

Keep in mind that only optometrists can provide these type of comprehensive eye exams. Pediatricians and family physicians do not specialize in vision and are not fully trained to do eye exams, which means they may miss problems that need immediate treatment.
