Unless you use hypoallergenic cosmetics, your foundation, mascara, eyeliner, and eyeshadow likely contain ingredients that could cause you to suffer an allergic reaction or eye infection. Mica and bismuth oxychloride in eyeshadow and foundation can make your skin itchy, red and flaky if you are allergic to these ingredients. The FDA further warns about using an unapproved color additive called kohl containing heavy metal salts and dangerous amounts of lead. Kohl eyeliners can cause serious eye infections if the eyeliner flakes or melts into the eyes.
Eyeshadow and mascara particles can enter the eye's tear film, irritate your eyes, cause conjunctivitis or corneal infections. People with dry eyes are more susceptible to eye problems associated with eyeshadow and mascara use since they lack sufficient eye fluid to flush out cosmetic particles. Optometrists recommend replacing mascara and eyeshadow products every three months with new products to avoid using degraded cosmetics that tend to flake easily.
When applying mascara, be especially careful about how close you place the brush to your eyelash roots. Mascara in the eye or poking your eye with a mascara brush is not only painful but could scratch your cornea. Signs of a corneal abrasion include eye pain, sensitivity to light, excessive tearing and muscle spasms forcing you to squint. Scratched corneas should be seen by your eye doctor as soon as possible for evaluation and treatment.
Eye irritation due to foundation arises from ingredients producing allergic reactions and from bacteria used in foundation. Although most cosmetic foundations contain preservatives to stop bacterial growth, it is still possible for bacteria to infiltrate foundation by entering open foundation bottles/squeeze tubes or by touching foundation bottle tips to contaminated surfaces.
