Signs of Computer Vision

What Is Computer Vision? What Are The Signs, Symptoms And Causes?

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is a vision and eye problems that are a direct result of the daily hours we all spend on our e-readers, phones, tablets, and laptops. Your children probably work on computers, then play on other devices and you may work on a desktop for eight-plus hours each day. Your Optometrist here at Eye 1st Vision Center in Sandy Springs understands the impact computer use can have on our eyesight.

What are The Symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome?

Forcing your eyes to remain focused on floating images tends to make you ‘lean into’ your screen and causes your natural blink reflex to become less frequent. Symptoms that your vision is being affected are:

  • Headaches
  • Eyestrain
  • Dry Eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Irritated, red eyes
  • Neck and shoulder pain

What Are The Causes of CVS?

Chances are your work environment was not designed with your eye care in mind. Factors that may affect your eye health include:

  • Incorrect viewing distance from the screen
  • Insufficient lighting for your task
  • Poor workstation seating resulting in poor posture

Weak or inadequate prescription eyeglasses used for computer vision and work

Preexistent eye problems- If you know you need glasses but do not use them, your vision will strain to remain focused constantly.

Screen glare, contrast, and fluctuation

How Can CVS be treated?

Remember to apply the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, glance away for 20 seconds at an object approximately 20 feet from you.

  • Blink frequently!
  • Adjust your seating and/or the settings on your device
  • Rearrange your workstation
  • Add a glare filter to your monitor
