Eye and Vision Exam Services from Our Sandy Springs Optometry Team

Eyesight is something many of us both treasure and take for granted at the same time. We assume that our eyes will always reveal the world to us in all its beauty -- but eye diseases and refractive disorders can paint a less pretty picture for your ocular health and wellness. The good news is that your optometry team here at Eye 1st Vision Center in Sandy Springs can watch out for those problems and help protect your eyesight against them through regular eye and vision exam services.

optometrist and eye exam

Sometimes a vision problem is evident even in childhood. Infants have trouble processing visual data because their brain and eyes are still learning how to work in unison, but by the age of 6 months it's time to schedule an initial eye exam for your baby. We can look for problems involving eye alignment, coordination, focusing ability, light response, depth perception and other issues that can be corrected through vision therapy and other methods. We can also examine the eyes for signs of congenital diseases.

Comprehensive Eye Exams From Our Sandy Springs Optometrists

Eye function and eye health evaluations remain important at all stages of life. We recommend this kind of eye exam every two years if you have apparently healthy eyes, or every year if you have a known eye or vision issue. Eye health evaluations include a detailed examination of the inside of the eye, preferably with the pupils dilated so can get the best possible view, to look for retinal problems such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy or retinal injury. We also measure the fluid pressure inside the eye; elevated pressure can warn us of a possible case of glaucoma. Some of these eye diseases cause permanent, progressive eye damage and loss of vision -- but by checking for them regularly, your Sandy Springs optometrist (Dr. Shida or Dr. Patel) can prescribe immediate treatment to minimize further damage and save your sight.

Children should receive their first vision exam before they enter school for the first time. Myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism are all common refractive errors that can make everyday schoolwork difficult or even impossible. We can determine the exact prescription necessary to create corrective lenses that compensate perfectly for refractive errors. These exams need to be repeated at regular intervals because that prescription can change from year to year. This is especially true once you reach middle age and experience an additional refractive error called presbyopia, which your optometrist can correct by with a prescription for multifocal lenses.
