Treating Pink Eye at Eye 1st Vision Center, Your Preferred Sandy Springs Optometrist

Pink eye is an ailment that often affects children (and their teachers), where it can spread quickly from student to student in classrooms or while out playing together at recess. If you or one of your children has contracted a case of pink eye, which is also referred to as conjunctivitis, you’ll want to come in for evaluation by a trusted eye doctor without delay.

Patients in Sandy Springs, as well as those in nearby Atlanta, Brookhaven, Marietta, and Roswell, appreciate the fact that our optometrist, Dr. George Shida, has been providing eye care services here since 1981. We are experts in diagnosing and treating pink eye and are standing by to assist you..

What Causes Pink Eye?

Pink eye occurs when the eyes’ conjunctiva (a clear covering) grow inflamed. The term “pink eye” refers to the color that appears from blood vessels dilating while being inflamed.

Optometry professionals have identified three causes of pink eye:

Viral conjunctivitis is a type of pink eye that results in patients having sensitivity to light and their watery eyes will typically feel itchy. It is spread directly from person to person via coughing and sneezing.

Bacterial conjunctivitis is characterized by a sticky substance that often causes patients’ eyelids to become crusty and stuck together. If untreated, this form of pink eye can lead to severe damage to the eyes.

Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious. Patients get this form of pink eye after exposure to allergens such as pollen or pet dander.

How Can My Eye Doctor Treat Pink Eye?

Upon arrival to our facility, you’ll undergo a thorough exam for pink eye.

If you have a case of viral conjunctivitis, the eye doctor will typically advise you that it will clear up over the next few days.

When the examination reveals that you have bacterial conjunctivitis, you will usually get a prescription for antibiotic drops along with some ointment that you will apply at home until the condition resolves.

If the diagnosis is allergic conjunctivitis, the optometrist will usually advise you to obtain over the counter allergy medication to take care of the symptoms.

Avoid Spreading Pink Eye to Other People

Protect other people by minimizing their exposure to your contagious pink eye. This includes not sharing makeup, tissues or towels with other people. Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing. Wash your hand frequently. If someone asks to borrow your contact lenses, refuse!
