Glaucoma is a type of eye conditions that can cause permanent vision loss. The cause of glaucoma is damage to the nerve that connects the eye to the brain. When this nerve is damaged or diseased it cannot be cured. However, you can get treatment for glaucoma. Treatments include prescription strength eye drops and medications to reduce eye pressure. You may also need to get referred for eye surgery to repair damage due to glaucoma.
The symptoms of glaucoma depend on the type of this condition. For individuals with open-angle glaucoma the most common symptom is slow vision loss. You may also experience halos around lights, tunnel vision, red eyes, or nausea accompanied by eye pain. If you have angle-closure glaucoma this is characterized by intense eye pain and visual disturbances.
When you go to your optometrist for glaucoma you will begin with a glaucoma exam. This is a specialized type of eye exam that tests your optical nerve for damage or disease. Following the results of the eye exam you can receive treatment for glaucoma, if needed. By going to your trusted optometrist Dr. Shida you will also receive additional information on how to care for your eyes if you have glaucoma.
