Annual eye exams are a crucial part of eye health for children. With the new school year under way, this is an ideal time to learn more about the benefits of eye exams before scheduling an appointment with an optometrist in or near the Sandy Springs area.
Annual optometry appointments help determine whether children’s vision is developing properly. Children with vision problems might have difficulty reading off a blackboard or screen in school or trouble doing assignments at home, making it harder for them to do well academically. If our optometrist finds evidence of astigmatism, nearsightedness or farsightedness during eye exams, they can order corrective lenses for children to wear so that they are able to see comfortably.
Routine eye exams can also help an optometrist detect any vision problems that need treatment, such as a lazy eye that can be corrected with an eye patch. When these problems are caught early, this helps prevent them from becoming more severe and having a more serious impact on children’s vision and learning.
During eye exams for children, the optometrist will also check other factors that affect vision, such as eye alignment, eye movement and reactions to changes in lighting. If any potential issues are found, the optometrist will recommend treatment options to help ensure that children are able to see clearly. Parents should also discuss any concerns they have about their children’s vision with the optometrist, such as whether or not their children squint or hold books very close to their face while reading.
Bringing children in for an eye exam every year is also important because they do not always realize that they have vision problems. By having their eyes checked annually, they can get the help they need.
