Eye Health and Vitamins

It's key to eat a wide variety of fruits and veggies to stay healthy, and there are some nutrients that are specifically important to your eye health. Lutein and zeaxanthin are key nutrients to help protect your eyes from macular degeneration and cataracts. Vitamin A is important for keeping your cornea strong and safe. Vitamin C boosts your overall immune system, protecting your body (including your eyes) from a variety of diseases.

What to Eat For Eye Health

To keep your eyes healthy, it's important to get plenty of these vital nutrients into your diet. While there are some supplements on the market that promote good eye health, your body is best at absorbing nutrients that come from real, whole foods. For lutein and zeaxanthin, leafy greens are your best bet. Kale, turnip greens, spinach, and collard greens all have high levels of these nutrients. For vitamin A, look towards orange foods like carrots, squash, orange bell peppers, and sweet potatoes. For vitamin C, you'll want to increase your intake of citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, and lemons. While orange juice is delicious, it's better for your health to eat the whole fruit, so you get a healthy dose of fiber along with the natural sweetness of the orange.
