Floaters

Floaters

Taking care of your eyes is hugely important, especially as you start to get older. If you've started to notice floaters in your vision, visit our Sandy Springs optometrist as soon as possible.

What Are Floaters?

For the most part, your vision is clear. However, many people suffer from eye floaters. These floaters appear as black or grey specks that seem to float across a person's field of view.

While optometry hasn't fully uncovered the mystery of floaters, a few causes are known at this time. For many people, floaters are a result of the aging process and the vitreous in the eyes becoming thinner. However, this problem may also occur as a result of simply rubbing your eyes. In some cases, floaters are a result of an underlying eye disease, which is why getting floaters checked out is important.

How an Optometrist Treats Floaters

The first step to figuring out how a Sandy Springs optometrist is going to treat your eye floaters is figuring out what's causing them. If your eye floaters are caused by an underlying disease, that disease will need to be treated. If the problem is caused by rubbing your eyes too much, you'll have to change your habits.

Floaters caused by aging eyes can also be treated in many cases. A vitrectomy, in which the vitreous is removed and replaced with a fluid to help your eye keep its shape, can remove the presence of floaters, but is only recommended in extreme cases. Keep in mind that this surgery isn't successful for everybody, and some people develop new floaters after surgery.
